Step Three: Ask About It

This is a critical step. If you don’t check in, you will not know if you have hit the mark. Most of us naturally expect people to behave rationally, reasonably, and in line with how we see things. But you must remember their bias toward holding on to B1 beliefs and seeing things through that lens. This bias always leads to selective interpretation, increasing the likelihood that people will interpret the experience differently than you might expect. Given this reality, feedback becomes critical to getting it right. Remember: Don’t believe everything you think!

As you ask about the experience you have provided, it is quite possible that you could walk away from that feedback session pleased with the outcome, while those providing the feedback regret their candidness, thinking that whatever they said could come back to haunt them later. Even the experience of asking about the experience has an impact on people’s beliefs. To find out how people are really interpreting the experiences you provide, you must ask them about the experience and the beliefs they are forming. Whenever you do ask, bear in mind a few do’s and don’ts:
